Giving or Getting that First Massage

December 11, 2008

Are you considering buying a massage for a friend or loved one this holiday season? If so, here is some helpful information for lucky recipients who will be getting their first massage. (Whatever you do, don’t tell them about the incentive for gift-givers that you found on the specials page of my Web site.)

If this will be your first massage, I will first ask you to fill out an intake form with important health information. This allows me to give you the best possible results while watching out for potential health risks. At this time we will discuss specifics of the massage—areas that need particular attention, the type of pressure you prefer, the length of the massage, and other preferences that will ensure you get a sensational massage. I’ll ask if you want to listen to music. If so, I have a wide range of appropriate choices, or you can bring an iPod or other MP3 player and we can listen to your music.

Next, I will show you into the massage room and let you know where to hang your clothes, place jewelry, etc. I will leave the room while you prepare for the massage and disrobe to your comfort level. Most folks disrobe to their underwear, others prefer to be completely undressed, and still others prefer to be completely clothed. (Be assured that you will always be covered by the sheets. In Tennessee, a privacy drape is required by law, so your privacy is always maintained and respected. The only part of your body uncovered is the part being worked on, such as your back, legs, or arms.)

You will position yourself face down on the massage table under the sheets; after knocking, I will return to the room to begin the massage. You can choose one or more positioning devices—including a face cradle to position your head and neck, a bolster for resting your ankles, and a small pillow for your neck and eyes while you are face up. I will help you get positioned just right when I return to the massage room.

Once we have begun I will ask if the pressure is comfortable. The pressure of a massage can range from light to very deep. It’s recommended that we begin with a light-to-medium pressure for your first massage. This will allow you to get familiar with the entire massage process before we deepen the pressure. It is very important that you let me know if you feel any pain. You might feel discomfort while I’m working on a knot, but this discomfort should be temporary.

Speaking of communication, it’s important that you let me know if there is anything that will improve your massage experience, such as a change in pressure or room temperature. Don’t feel compelled to have a conversation with me; I’ll follow your lead. In fact, quiet time may allow you to slip into the relaxed bliss you need.

I hope this information is useful. You can always contact me with questions prior to your massage. That massage will pave the way for improved health and reduced stress.

Enjoy!
